Contemporary Desk Lamps - Glossary

Your contemporary desk lamps are far more than just a base and a shade (although we'll define those terms, too). With all this new variety there is liable to be some confusion. Become a desk lamp expert by studying the terms below.

Contemporary Desk Lamps - Key Terms

Data Ports - These handy ports are usually located in the base of your desk lamp and give you the option to connect and disconnect your computer or laptop with ease. Most desk lamps with data ports are as sleek and modern as the technology they contain.

3-Way Switch - These lamps give you the option of using two or more on/off switches. These lamps are great if you want to use your wall switch to control the light as well as the switch on the lamp itself.

Height Adjustable - Concentrating on a small project or looking at a spread out assignment each require different light. With adjustable desk lamps, you can move your light source closer to your desk or move it away depending on your needs. Gooseneck and swing arm mechanisms give you the flexibility to point your light source wherever you need.

Gooseneck - A gooseneck mechanism on your adjustable desk lamp means you can position the head of the lamp in almost any direction. The arm of the lamp is segmented so that it can move freely.

Swing Arm - Some desk lamps come with a mechanism in the base that allows you to turn your lamp's light source 360 degrees without actually moving your lamp.

Hinge - The mechanism in the arm of an adjustable lamp that allows you to move your lamp's light source up and down.

Dimmer Switch - Change the intensity of your desk lamp at your leisure. Some switches let you fine tune the brightness on your lamp, while others have 2 or more preset light settings that you can change by turning or pulling on the light switch.

Down Light - Most good desk lamps direct the light downward, usually with a conical shade or, in the case of banker and piano lamps, a long cylindrical shade. This directs the light to fall on your desk and not dissipate all over your office.

Battery Operated - Powered by batteries, these lamps are extremely portable and efficient. Great for students or crafters who need concentrated light in different areas.

Energy Efficient - Energy efficient lighting uses about 75% less energy than regular lighting. A desk lamp that is energy efficient can help the environment and your electrical bill. As energy efficient lamps become more commonplace, it is becoming easier to find a stylish, eco-friendly light for your desk.

Shade - One of the basic components of your desk lamp, the shade sits above the light source and directs the light down toward your desk. The shade also protects your eyes by preventing you from looking a bare bulb. Lamp shades can come in many shapes from conical to oblong, but you will want to find one that directs the light from your lamp toward your work. Shades also come in many different colors and can be made of cloth, glass, plastic or metal.

Base - The base of your lamp usually determines how your lamp functions for you. Adjustable bases have arms that let you move your light source. Plastic or metal bases can be molded into decorative shapes. Ceramic bases can come in different shapes and with different designs. Your base usually expresses the personality of your contemporary desk lamp.
